El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele stated that the 17 individuals deported from the United States are “murderers” and “high-profile criminals.”
The US government announced the deportation of these individuals, accusing them of being affiliated with the Tren de Aragua and MS-13 gangs.
Bukele confirmed the deportation via a message on X, emphasizing that the criminals would be transferred to a maximum-security prison in El Salvador.
The Salvadoran president also claimed that six of the deportees are child rapists, though he did not provide evidence for the allegations.
El Salvador Reinforces Fight Against Organized Crime with New Deportations
This operation, carried out with support from U.S. allies, is part of El Salvador’s ongoing campaign against organized crime.
The deportation of these individuals follows a similar action in March, when over 200 Venezuelans were sent to the Central American country.
The Trump administration had invoked the Enemy Alien Act to deport members of the Tren de Aragua without a judicial hearing, although that law is currently blocked by a federal judge.
Experts have challenged Trump’s claim that the Tren de Aragua has infiltrated the government of Nicolás Maduro, calling it inaccurate.
The current status of the deportees has not yet been disclosed by Salvadoran authorities.
